With a propensity for lenghty internal monologues, I have come to realize that nothing is new but merely appropriated from something else. There are no new ideas. Although this fact alone may be the source of eternal despair for any creative person, it is both humbling and inspiring. All I can aim to be is a maker - a maker of things; a maker of visual casseroles.

Richard Serra “Greenpoint Rounds” at Gagosian Gallery
by L. Ruano, April 11, 2010

American minimalist sculptor and video artist, Richard Serra, recently opened his latest exhibition, titled Greenpoint Rounds. The show featured eight new drawings, utilizing a paint-stick, heating it to a viscous and sometimes fluid state. He slowly builds up the dense and irregular form so that each drawing has its own unique surface that appears as a palpable structure rather than a mere surface. “Greenpoint Rounds” runs through May 15th, 2010 for those in town looking to visit.

Apt Pupils.
When we are taught to question what is being dictated, to find out own voice in the matter, then when it’s all said and done, who’s agenda are we REALLY following?
For the past few days, I have found myself inspired to draw again, after a dry spell lasting a fortnight.
Thanks to a hefty tome of a photo book entitled: African Odyssey, my imagination has come alive once again. Pilot 0.1mm fineliner is my friend.

Matthew Ritchie’s work describes the formation of the universe and deals explicitly with the idea of information being “on the surface.” Although often described as a painter, Ritchie creates works on paper, lenticular prints, large-scale installations, freestanding sculpture, web sites, and short stories which tie his sprawling works together into a narrative structure.
Matthew Ritchie is featured in the Season 3 episode “Structures” of the Art21 series “Art:21 — Art in the Twenty-First Century”.

Benjamin John Wood. He encouraged me to pursue Art when I was still in sciences at UBC. Thanks Ben.

What my parents looked like at my present age (24)

My Maternal Grandmother. She was one of the first women in her day (the 20s) to receive a university education. As one of the seven women in her graduating class, she completed a bachelor's degree in Mathematics.

My Maternal Grandfather. I attribute alot of my creativity to this man. Graduating with a degree in Chinese Literature, my grandfather went on to become a writer, poet, journalist, professor and filmmaker. He is a part of Taiwanese cinematic history.
